Spyware, also called adware, and trackware is small application installed on your computer in most cases without your explicit permission. It will monitor your Web habits, and Web surfing activity. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet remove. There are few types of spyware applications. One of them called "dialers". These "dialers" will dial a phone number somewhere far away, and you will have to pay a huge bill next month for very long International phone conversations. The other type called "browser hijackers". These spyware applications will change a start page URL in your browser settings, so every time you open your browser it will redirect you somewhere to the other site, or it will open few of the pop up windows that you don't really want to see.
If you notice that your home page hijacked, or your browser crashes, or some toolbars that you never installed appear in Internet Explorer, your computer most probably infected, but even if you don't see all these changes, you might still be infected, because most of the new spyware tools silently tracking your surfing habits in order to create a marketing profile for you as a user. Marketing companies try to understand what sites we visit, what products we buy, and what banners we click in order to sell us more.
It is hard to remove spyware, because most of these applications add a string of values to your registry keys. It is possible to remove the values from the registry manually, but in most cases it is almost impossible to monitor the changes done to the registry. Improper modifications to windows registry can cause your system become unbootable, so it is highly advisable not to modify the registry of you don't know what you are doing. Fortunately there are some free software products available on the Internet that will help you to get rid of such programs. One of the first spyware removal application on the market was LavaSoft AdAware (available for download at www.lavasoftusa.com)
