RENAME ALL FILES IN A DIRECTORY AT A TIME-USEFULL

No Comment - Post a comment

Select all the files in a folder by selecting a file and pressing Ctrl+A, then right click on any file and select Rename. And rename the file (the file on which u did right click) by pressing Alt+255. then press enter. All other files/folder selected will be automatically renamed to (2), (3), ..and so on. But u'll see that the file which u selected for rename has no visible name-rename it to 1 we also get an extra set of parenthesis in this case not exactly (2) instead of 2 as new name. Also if instead of Alt+255 we rename to web (any name) all files will be named like web,web(1),web(2)…so on.

Alt+255 is a way to rename a folder to no name.select a folder and press F2 to rename, then press backspace to clear old name and then press Alt+255 (holding one Alt key press 2 then 5 then 5) then press enter to have that folder with blank name.

How to Empty My Recent Documents Automatically on Log off?

No Comment - Post a comment

All the files you open will be stored in your user profile in a hidden folder named My Recent Documents. This is really annoying and a treat to our privacy! We can make this folder auto cleared on logoff using a single registry change.

1. Click Start > Run > Type in regedit

2. In the Registry editor navigate to the following key.

HKEY_Current_User > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer

3. Right click on the Right Pane > New > Dword Value & name it as ClearRecentDocsOnExit .

4. Double Clcik on it & se the value to 1 .

This will clear the My Recent Documents Folder automatically on logoff.
To make it normal  either delete the Dword value or set the value to 0.

Increasing options in add/remove programs:

No Comment - Post a comment

Not a fan of MSN Messenger? don't want Windows Media Player on your system? Fair enough, but if you go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, by default none of Windows XP's 'built in' programs are visible. it's fairly easy to change, though... just open the file X:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf (where X: is the drive letter where Windows XP is installed) in Notepad. You should see a section of the file something like this:
[Components]
NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7
Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7
Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7
NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7
iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7
com=comsetup.dll,OcEntry,comnt5.inf,hide,7
dtc=msdtcstp.dll,OcEntry,dtcnt5.inf,hide,7
IndexSrv_System = setupqry.dll,IndexSrv,setupqry.inf,,7
TerminalServer=TsOc.dll, HydraOc, TsOc.inf,hide,2
msmq=msmqocm.dll,MsmqOcm,msmqocm.inf,,6
ims=imsinsnt.dll,OcEntry,ims.inf,,7
fp_extensions=fp40ext.dll,FrontPage4Extensions,fp40ext.inf,,7
AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,hide,7
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
RootAutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,rootau.inf,,7
IEAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,ieaccess.inf,,7
This is a list of all components installed at the moment. I've taken the example of MSN Messenger - the program entry called 'msmsgs', third-last line. You can see the word 'hide' highlighted - this is the string which tells Windows not to display the component in the Add/Remove Programs list. Fix this up by simply deleting the word 'hide' like so:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
To this:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
Now, after restarting, you should be able to see MSN Messenger in the Add/Remove Programs list. If you want to be able to quickly view and remove all components, simply open the sysoc.inf file and do a global find and replace for the word ",hide" and replace it with a single comma ",".

Internet Protocol

No Comment - Post a comment

Internet Protocol address) is a unique address that certain electronic devices use in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP)—in simpler terms, a computer address. Any participating network device—including routers, computers, time-servers, printers, Internet fax machines, and some telephones—can have their own unique address. Also, many people can find personal information through IP addresses.

An IP address can also be thought of as the equivalent of a street address or a phone number (compare: VoIP (voice over (the) internet protocol)) for a computer or other network device on the Internet. Just as each street address and phone number uniquely identifies a building or telephone, an IP address can uniquely identify a specific computer or other network device on a network.

An IP address can appear to be shared by multiple client devices either because they are part of a shared hosting web server environment or because a proxy server (e.g., an ISP or anonymizer service) acts as an intermediary agent on behalf of its customers, in which case the real originating IP addresses might be hidden from the server receiving a request. The analogy to telephone systems would be the use of predial numbers (proxy) and extensions (shared).

IP addresses are managed and created by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. IANA generally allocates super-blocks to Regional Internet Registries, who in turn allocate smaller blocks to Internet service providers and enterprises.

Changing the Toolbar Background

No Comment - Post a comment

You can customize the background you see on Internet Explorer's toolbar. It's just a bitmap. To change the background, create a REG_SZ value called BackBitmap in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar. Set this value to the path and name of the bitmap file you want to see in the toolbar's background. Internet Explorer tiles the bitmap horizontally and vertically to fill the toolbar.

Locking the desktop

If you are leaving your computer for a while and do not wish to turn it off, but want to assure that no-one else can use the computer while you are away, locking the desktop is the best option.

By pressing WINDOWSKEY+L, you password protect your system just as if you had logged out or restarted the computer. The advantage is that any programs or processes that were running when you locked the desktop will stay open and running in the background, ready for you to resume work or play.

What is spyware

No Comment - Post a comment

Spyware, also called adware, and trackware is small application installed on your computer in most cases without your explicit permission. It will monitor your Web habits, and Web surfing activity. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet remove. There are few types of spyware applications. One of them called "dialers". These "dialers" will dial a phone number somewhere far away, and you will have to pay a huge bill next month for very long International phone conversations. The other type called "browser hijackers". These spyware applications will change a start page URL in your browser settings, so every time you open your browser it will redirect you somewhere to the other site, or it will open few of the pop up windows that you don't really want to see.
If you notice that your home page hijacked, or your browser crashes, or some toolbars that you never installed appear in Internet Explorer, your computer most probably infected, but even if you don't see all these changes, you might still be infected, because most of the new spyware tools silently tracking your surfing habits in order to create a marketing profile for you as a user. Marketing companies try to understand what sites we visit, what products we buy, and what banners we click in order to sell us more.
It is hard to remove spyware, because most of these applications add a string of values to your registry keys. It is possible to remove the values from the registry manually, but in most cases it is almost impossible to monitor the changes done to the registry. Improper modifications to windows registry can cause your system become unbootable, so it is highly advisable not to modify the registry of you don't know what you are doing. Fortunately there are some free software products available on the Internet that will help you to get rid of such programs. One of the first spyware removal application on the market was LavaSoft AdAware (available for download at www.lavasoftusa.com)

You should check for updates before you use this program for the first time

Creating a desktop shortcut for locking your comp!

No Comment - Post a comment

If you use your computer in an area where others may have access to it, and there are things on your system you would rather have kept confidential, locking your desktop when you leave the computer is an essential task. Here's a recipe for a desktop shortcut that will lock your computer in two easy clicks:

Right click on an empty area of the desktop and choose 'new' then 'shortcut.' The create shortcut wizard will open; in the first text box, type '%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' and then give your shortcut an appropriate name on the next page, and hit 'finish.'

You will notice that the shortcut you created has a blank icon. To select a more appropriate one, right click on the shortcut and hit 'properties.' In the 'shortcut' tab, click the 'change icon' button.

In the 'look for icons in this file' box, type '%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll' then click 'ok' to see a range of icons for your new shortcut. Choose an appropriate icon. Your desktop locking shortcut is now ready for use. Test it out.

Get back the missing folder options in windows

No Comment - Post a comment

Suppose Folder Options (windows xp & other windows) that we get for every folder in the menu bar menu Tools is missing (some one has disabled it) and you want to change any setting in folder option, then here is a trick to get back the missing folder options tool.Go to Startmenu->Run and enter regedit there and press ok to execute regedit (registry editor). There you'll see a tree like structure of folders like stuff in left. There navigate to registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and on right side you'll see many values.

Out of these values in right see a value (key) named "NoFolderOptions" .Double click after highlighting it, if there under value box it's written 1 then change it to 0 and press enter. Exit the registry editor and close any folder and open again to see the settings.If you want to disable Folder Options then set the value of "NoFolderOptions" to 1 (and to retrieve it back change it to 0).

The Registry Tweak To Enable/Disable Taskmanager

No Comment - Post a comment

Navigate to Start menu->Run, and here in Run window type regedit.exe and press ok to open registry editor.

Here we need to do registry editing. On left pane difefrent registry hives are present and on right diffrent registry keys and their coresponding values appear.On left pane go to the entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System by first double clicking HKEY_CURRENT_USER and then under it double clicking Software and so on till you reach System. There in right see a lot of keys and values.

In that right pane right click and click New->DWORD Value to create a new registry variable(key) and assign coresponding values. Now right click that new value (that we created now) and modify it's name to DisableTaskMgr.

Now what value to give to the registry key named DisableTaskMgr.If you want to disable taskmanager assign 1 as value to key DisableTaskMgr. If again you want to enable the taskmanager you have to assign 0 as value to the key DisableTaskMgr that you created to disable it.

Speed Up Internet for faster downloads

No Comment - Post a comment

1. First, open the Windows Registry using Regedit, and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProvider

2. Note the following lines (all hex dwords):
Class = 008
LocalPriority = 1f3 (499) - local names cache
HostsPriority = 1f4 (500) - the HOSTS file
DnsPriority = 7d0 (2000) - DNS
NetbtPriority = 7d1 (2001) - NetBT name-resolution, including WINS

3. What we're aiming to do is increase the priority of the last 4 settings, while keeping their order. The valid range is from -32768 to +32767 and lower numbers mean higher priority compared to other services. What we're aiming at is lower numbers without going to extremes, something like what's shown below should work well:

4. Change the "Priority" lines to:
LocalPriority = 005 (5) - local names cache
HostsPriority = 006 (6) - the HOSTS file
DnsPriority = 007 (7) - DNS
NetbtPriority = 008 - NetBT name-resolution, including WINS

5. Reboot for changes to take effect...

Every software or application in windows has a command associated with it which runs/executes when the software operates it. But we can use this shortcut for all windows common applications like control panel media player etc. We need to open Start Menu-> Run and there we’ve to type the shortcut to open the application we want & press enter. For example if you want to open Add/Remove Porgrams, generally we’ve to go to control panel and then open it, which takes more time. But here in Run command of start menu type few letters appwiz.cpl and that application will open instantly. Here’s a list of such window shortcut commands which when used in
Startmenu->Run will easily open/access everything in win, reducing our waste time.

Following is the complete list where each line’ll appear as Application Name- Run command for that app .(sorted

If you would like to make thumbnail images a little larger, here's how:

Go to Start>> Run. Type in: regedit [Enter] or click OK.
Drill to the following registry key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Click once on the Explorer entry to empty its contents into the right pane.
Look for an entry named ThumbnailSize.
Once you find it, double click this entry and change the hexidecimal value to anything between 32 and 96.
If this entry does not exist, right click an empty area within the right pane and select NEW>> DWORD. Name this value: ThumbnailSizeThen, double-click this new DWORD entry and insert a value between 32 and 96.
Exit the Windows Registry saving your changes.It may be necessary for you to reboot your system for the changes to take effect.

3. expand "local computer policy"
4. then expand "administrative templates"
5. then expand "network branch"
6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler"
7. on right window double click "limit reservable bandwidth"
8. on setting tab check the "enabled"
